I’m already taking leave until 4th January, and will be heading back to my hometown, Kuala Kangsar, Perak today. I’ll be offline, so the updates to my blog will be too for a while. I will try to have updates through Twitter, though.

Answering “So … what do you do?”

For most types of work, only two levels of description are ever needed. Accountants, for example, would describe themselves as accountants to laypeople, and “tax” or “GL” or “fixed assets” to other accountants.

For my line of work, however, I find it interesting that I need to give lots of different answers to different kinds of people:

How do you explain “software developer” to someone who doesn’t even know what software is? Therefore, my dear grandmother thinks I’m selling computers …
To normal laypeople, I just say I’m in IT.
To people who are more IT savvy, I say that I’m in software.
To people in software, I say that I develop web applications using .NET and C#.
To people who are working in software development companies, I say that I’m doing both sustaining (defects) and product development.

Cosmic Bowl Sucks

I’m going to re-blog what a friend of mine, ady has just put on his post on how terible Cosmic Bowl are. Just to emphasize on how bad things were over there.

Review: SUCKS BIG TIME !! Avoid whenever possible.

We just had a bowling session last week, and what a dump the place was. The equipment malfunctioning all the time. There’s not much bowling ball weight to choose from. And whatever bowling ball they have, it was chipped and has a big hole on it!! (Not to mention all the problem ady has found out).

To the management, please improve your condition. The Malaysian consumer just had it with all this corporations and businesses who just keep thinking of the profit without giving much value to whatever we’ve paid for.

Gmail Adds Themes To It’s Feature List

Gmail fans have been building unofficial extensions to spice up their inboxes for a while, but up til now themes haven’t been an integral part of Gmail. We wanted to go beyond simple color customization, so out of the 30 odd themes we’re launching today, there’s a shiny theme with chrome styling, another one that turns your inbox into a retro notepad, nature themes that change scenery over time, weather driven themes that can rain on your mailbox, and fun characters to keep you in good company.

To customize your inbox, go to the Themes tab under Settings. I don’t see the settings available yet on my account, so I might be checking back soon.

UPDATE: The themes setting is available now on my account. Should be available on yours too. Enjoy. Woohoo!!

An open house (or “rumah terbuka”) is a Malaysian concept whereby people celebrating various holidays will invite friends to drop by for festive snacks and fellowship.

Eid ul-Fitr (Hari Raya Aidilfitri):

Eid ul-Fitr or Id-ul-Fitr (Arabic: عيد الفطر ‘Īdu l-Fiṭr‎), often abbreviated to Eid, is a Muslim holiday that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. Eid is an Arabic word meaning “festivity”, while Fiṭr means “to break the fast” (and can also mean “nature”, from the word “fitrah”); and so the holiday symbolizes the breaking of the fasting period. It is celebrated starting on the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal.

Ayat-Ayat Cinta (Verses of Love)

I HATE reading novels. God only knows how I hate reading them, especially the ones that has words like “Love” or “Cinta” stamped to the title. However, the LOVE of MY life (my dearest wife, of course) is an avid novel reader. She just crazy about novels, and she keeps on pushing me to read this particular book:

Ayat-Ayat Cinta (Verses of Love) by Habibburahman El Shirazy.

I finally succumbs to her persuasion…

… TWICE !! …

There! I’ve said it. (There goes my emotionless, prosaic, repressed image that most men would like to keep). But it just simply that good. After finished reading it, I’ve realized it’s not your typical love story at all!

The story actually is more about Islam, and full of Islamic values that can be learned. There’s so many positive reviews (spoiler alert) of this novel, and some even calls it as a soul builder. I still remember there’s one night, I picked up the book at 11 p.m., and still continues reading it up until 6 a.m. in the morning. It’s just that hard to put it back down once you’ve started reading it.

It’s one of the best selling novel in Indonesia, with 160,000 copies in three years.

A Short Synopsis
The story follows a character named Fahri, a student at the Al-Azhar University, Cairo. It guides us through the situations and lives of Indonesian students in Egypt. It also tells us a story of a relationship of two families that inside we can find the tolerance between Muslims and Coptical Christian (a part of Christianity that been followed by peoples at Egypt).

The Motion Picture
Following the huge success of the book, a movie of the same title by Hanung Bramantyo starred by Fedi Nuril, Rianti R. Cartwright, Carissa Putri Melanie Putria, and Zaskia Adya Mecca, was released on February 28, 2008 in Indonesia, May 8, 2008 in Singapore, and June 19, 2008 in Malaysia. Malaysian Television, TV3, shows the motion picture on it’s channel on October 10th, 2008, the 10th day of Shawwal.

In it’s opening weekend, Ayat-Ayat Cinta grossed RM 3.6 million in Indonesia, and grossed $39.882 million in 5 theaters in Singapore, ranking at #8 and averaged an estimated $7,976 per theater. In Malaysia, the movie grossed $15.521 million in 22 theaters, ranking at #11 and averaged an estimated $706 per theater.

However, please bear in mind that the movie has quite a different theme and focus from the book. It’s probably intentional, and it’s not easy to cramp 500+ pages of a book to 2 hour movie. The book has more detailed and different approach on it’s story and purpose.
